Choose a full sun location, preferably with southern exposure. Washingtonia robusta is a light-loving palm – the more direct sunlight it receives, the faster it grows and develops a thick trunk. For indoor cultivation, it requires the brightest spot available, right next to a window.
The best time for repotting or moving the palm outdoors is spring (April–May). This allows the palm to fully acclimate and expand its root system before winter. For indoor cultivation, seedlings can be repotted year-round, provided adequate lighting is maintained.
The palm requires well-drained, sandy-loam soil with a pH of 5.5–7.5. A dedicated palm soil mix with a generous addition of quartz sand and perlite is ideal. Solid drainage at the bottom of the pot is crucial; while robusta is drought-tolerant, it is highly sensitive to water stagnation, which causes root rot.
Winter the palm in a bright, cool room (5–12°C). Washingtonia robusta tolerates short-term temperature drops to approx. -3°C/-6°C, but in pot cultivation, it must be protected from frost. During winter, reduce watering to a minimum – the substrate should be almost dry to prevent fungal diseases.
